今朝のThe Wall Street Journal Onlineを読んでいたら "Should you go cold turkey?" という一文が目にとまりました。

記事のタイトルは "Behind Antismoking Policy, Influence of Drug Industry" で、禁煙するのに、ニコチンパッチなどの薬が必要なのか、薬なんか必要ないのか、米国福祉省の出す禁煙ガイドラインにまつわる裏事情（お金）の話でした。

記事の中にはこんな感じで何度も cold turkey と出てきます。

最後の文章で、なんとなく意味もつかめますが、どうしてもマンガちっくな「あわれな冷たい七面鳥」の絵が思い浮かんでしまって(笑)、日本語のはっきりした訳語がわかりません。調べてみました。

cold turkey: *米話* 中毒患者から麻薬[アルコール,タバコなど]をいきなり完全に取り上げること(から生じる症状)

とあります。さらに

go cold turkey: (麻薬・習慣などを)きっぱりとやめる,断つ

と載っていました。英英辞典も見てみると、Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary Online版では名詞のcold turkeyの説明はこんなふうです。

: the unpleasant state that drug addicts experience when they suddenly stop taking a drug; a way of treating drug addicts that makes them experience this state
副詞として使った例文: I quit smoking cold turkey.

なるほど。これでしっかり覚えましたが、自分で使うことはなさそうです(笑)
